The Wave took the field Tuesday afternoon to begin a crucial series against their rivals from Bronx Community. The sun made way for clouds and blusterous winds that made this mid 60's April day feel more like a day on the gridiron than on the diamond. As the first pitch was thrown the clouds rolled in followed by a few raindrops that would set the stage for a wild game.
The Broncos took an early lead in the first on an unearned run off
Michael Cassavella. Cassavella had trouble painting the corners today on a day where it was hard to feel the seams. Today was the tightest zone called at the dish by an umpire this season. The calls went both ways which was largely responsible for the high scoring affair that played out. Cassavella would gut it out and settle down a bit. Enough to get him into the 7th with his boys still in the game.
Jimmy Daley took over in the 7th, inheriting two runners. Jimmy did a tremendous job holding the runners with good looks and varied timing. He would get out of the inning with just one run crossing the plate. Help came in the name of left fielder
Samuel Marquez who made an outfield assist at 3rd on a beautiful throw that was on the money and handled beautifully by
Justin Baierlein who applied the tag.
Kingsborough's bats would really come alive in the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings where they scored 10 runs combined. Daley would hit a two run triple in the 6th, a solo shot onto Oriental Blvd in the 7th, and a 2 run double in the 8th that put them ahead for good. The 8th inning was started on a 2 out double by Joseph Caparelli over the head of the left fielder. He was plated by lead off hitter
Justin Baierlein who hit a ball right back up the box off the lefty reliever who came in to face Baierlein. Baierlein hit the cover off the ball today being only a homer away from the cycle as well as stealing pair of bases.
Charles Cabranes would get what would be the game winning RBI driving in
Christopher Armenti on what originally was just an insurance run. Chris also had a big day at the plate with 3 hits including a homerun.
John Boenzi added 2 hits as well.
The Broncos would not go down quietly in the 9th, stringing together a few hits off Daley. They would get within one making the score 13-12. With the tying run on base and the go ahead run at the plate Daley would give up a deep fly ball to centerfield that would be tracked down by
Juan Pilarte. On a day where the ball was really carrying out to left and left center this one was was held up enough to end the game. The football like conditions produced a score that resembled just that. The two teams meet up again on Friday at Kingsborough.
