Baseball : Wave Falls to Tigers 2-1 in Series Opener

4/25/2013 11:10:00 AM

The Wave entered their final CUNY series Tuesday facing off against Queensborough. They came in with a 5-3 record in CUNY and tried to improve that record by sending Southpaw Michael Cassavella to the Bump. Cassavella looked poised on the mound from the beginning, getting him and his team out of trouble in the first. He struck out the 5 batter on a beautiful curve ball that would set the defensive tone for the rest of the game.

Kingsborough's offense came out swinging in the bottom of the first starting with lead off batter Justin Baierlein smacking a ball through the hole on the left side. Charles Cabranes, hitting out of the two spot then lined a ball into center making it first and second with no out and the 3 batter Jimmy Daley up. Daley hit a fly ball into left centerfield that saw Baierlein retreat back to the 2nd base bag to tag up. The throw to third was a good one and Baierlein's slide was direct into the bag. It seemed as if Justin got his foot in but he was called out on the play. The clean up batter in Christopher Armenti then stepped to the plate with 2 outs and Cabranes on first. Armenti continued his great hitting by driving a fastball into the right centerfield gap for an RBI triple making the score 1-0.

The game became an all-out pitchers' duel after that with both hurlers putting up zero after zero into the 6th. In the top of the 6th the Queensborough shortstop led the inning off with a base hit into left  followed by another single by the 4 batter into right that allowed the runner on first to advance to 3rd, making it 1st and 3rd with no out. The 5 batter stepped to the plate with the middle infield back at double play depth. With the runner on first in motion a ground ball was hit to the second baseman Joseph Capparelli who seemed to get the ball caught in his glove on the transfer, perhaps being stuck between the choice of getting the lead runner or going to first. The run scored and the Wave did not get an out. Another run would score in the inning making it 2-1 but Cassavella would prevent further damage.

The 8th inning Would begin with lead off man Justin Baierlein smoking a ball down the right field line and into the corner as he has several times this year. The hit went for a triple and brought up Charles Cabranes. Charlie hit a chopper at the 3rd baseman that was booted. Baierlein was unable to score on the play, holding at 3rd on a good base running read. The next batter Jimmy Daley swung at the first pitch with the infield in and Cabranes on the move. Daley hit a ground ball at the third baseman for the first out and now there were runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. The cleanup batter Christopher Armenti would then go down swinging followed by pinch hitter Samuel Marquez  who went down looking, coming off the bench from the left side to face the righty.

The game would remain 2-1 going into the bottom of the 9th. The wave would get up down just one with the 6, 7, and 8 batters due up. Joseph Liotta, Juan Pilarte, and Joseph Capparelli would go down in order to end the game.  Both pitchers had great days on the mound, went the distance, and threw strikes moving the game along in a matchup that took just over 2 hours to play. Michael Cassavella did everything he could on this day to help his team out, giving up just 1 earned run and playing superb defense. He fielded his position very well today, showing good athleticism pouncing off the mound to make a few plays. The two teams face off again on Friday afternoon at 4:00PM. Congratulations to Joseph Capparelli for winning the conference Player Of The Week last week for his play in their series against the Bronx.
