VALHALLA, N.Y. — The #6-seeded Kingsborough Wave pulled off an impressive upset on Saturday, defeating the #3-seeded Westchester Vikings 4–2 in the Region XV quarterfinals at Barrett Field.
It was a statement win for the Wave, who avenged a 5–0 loss to Westchester back in September, this time flipping the script in dramatic fashion to advance to the semifinals.
The match opened with both sides pressing high, but it was
Omario Walters ('11) who broke through first for Kingsborough, calmly slotting in the opening goal to set the tone. In the second half,
Jaquelle Pottinger ('64) doubled the lead with a perfectly executed free-kick set play just outside the penalty box, giving the Wave a 2–0 cushion.
Westchester, a perennial regional threat, wouldn't go down without a fight as they mounted their comeback. The Vikings converted on a corner in the 67th minute to make it 2–1 and later found an equalizer in the 81st minute after a free kick ricocheted off a Kingsborough defender and into the net.
But just when it seemed momentum had shifted, the Wave responded.
Ranza Toomer ('88) regained the lead with a clutch strike, before
Jevaughn Lamont ('90) sealed the victory with a stunning free kick over the Westchester keeper's head with just 16 seconds remaining, putting the exclamation point on an unforgettable 4–2 win.
With the result, the Wave advance to the Region XV semifinals, where they'll face the #2-seeded Ulster County Senators, a rematch of their 0–0 draw earlier this month.
