Brooklyn, NY -Â The KBCC Women Wave hosted Hostos Community College and Bronx Community College in their final homestand of the season. Prior to the first serve, the two sophomores of the team,
Jasmine Morris, and
Kyrah Allison, were honored with a pre- game ceremony.
Â
Hostos Community College Caiman @ Kingsborough Community College Wave:
Â
Set 1: Hostos Caiman 25, Kingsborough Wave 21
The first set was a back-and-forth contest with 9 lead changes. With the score tied at 20- 20, the Caimans went on a 5-1 run to secure the first set, 25-21.
Â
Set 2: Kingsborough Wave 25, Hostos Caiman 16
The Caimans came out strong in the second set, starting with yet another 5-1 run. However, the Wave quickly stormed back to take a 7-6 lead behind the efforts of Jocelyn
Toxqui and
Rayan Jahmi, who both made key diving saves. After taking the lead, the Wave never looked back and won the second set, 25-16.
Â
Set 3: Kingsborough Wave 25, Hostos Caiman 14
Wave's
Solandra Arizaga set the tone early by acing the Caimans on the first serve. This didn't faze the Caimans, as it remained a back-and-forth contest with the Wave holding a 14-12 lead. That was until
Jasmine Morris, on her sophomore day, placed a perfect spike in the back left corner that managed to stay in. This marked the beginning of an 11-2 run, putting the set away, 25-14.
Â
Set 4: Kingsborough Wave 25, Hostos Caiman 15
Looking to end the game in four sets, the Wave got off to a quick start, going up 4-0. However, that didn't last long, as the Caimans responded with four straight points of their own. The Wave showed out with an untouchable booming spike from freshman Jocelyn Toxqui, and
Kerlyn Gomez, similar to
Jasmine Morris in Set 3, placed a perfect spike in the back left corner that just managed to stay in bounds. Sophomore
Kyrah Allison, who was also honored in the pre-game activities, executed a perfect dump between four Caimans. For the third consecutive set, the Wave won handily, 25-15.
Â
The Women's Wave defeated the Caimans 3-1, outscoring them in the final three sets, 75- 45, and earned their sixth win of the season.
Bronx Community College Broncos @ Kingsborough Community College Wave:
Set 1: Kingsborough Wave 25, Bronx Broncos 21
The Women's Wave led the first set from the first serve to the end of the set, but the Broncos made them sweat it out toward the end. A 23-17 lead quickly shrank to 23-21, but following a timeout from head coach
Alexandra Akopyan, the Wave managed to regroup and put the first set away, 25-21.
Â
Set 2: Kingsborough Wave 25, Bronx Broncos 22
The Women's Wave were clinical in the second set, with aces by Jocelyn Toxqui, who continued to have a solid day, as well as
Solandra Arizaga. Down 21-10, the Broncos once again showed resiliency and fought their way back, scoring 8 straight points to make it a 21-18 game. The Wave managed to find their footing, as Toxqui, Arizaga, and Allison executed a pass-set-hit to perfection, and they would outlast the Broncos comeback attempt, 25-22.
Â
Set 3: Kingsborough Wave 25, Bronx Broncos 13
The Wave looked to sweep three straight sets from the Broncos and did so by getting out in front early with a 3-0 lead. Once again, the Broncos would not go down without a fight. After some early pushback from the Broncos, it was smooth sailing for the Wave as they cruised to a 25-13 victory, sweeping the Bronx and securing their season-high sixth consecutive set win and seventh win of the season.
Â
After the games, sophomores
Kyrah Allison and
Jasmine Morris were asked about the wins against Hostos and Bronx CC, their time with the team, and Monday's game against BMCC.
Â
"I think we are more confident going into the tournament now because we feel like we can do it; we know we can play well," said Allison after the season-high six straight set wins. "I think these two games showed us that we can connect better as a team when we play together, work hard, and hustle for everything. We will hold our heads up high for Monday," added Morris.
Â
Kyrah Allison emphasized the importance of ending the season on a high note: "Being the only two seniors, this will have a great impression on the girls next year. I hope all of the first-year players will come back and play again. If we end on a high note, they're more likely to put in the work, come back, and come back stronger."
Jasmine Morris reflected on what it means to win the home finale: "I'm very glad that we won both games today. As a senior, it's very sad to leave and not be able to play with the people who are going to be returning next year, but it was a good run. I enjoyed it while it lasted."
Â
The Wave have now won a season-high six consecutive sets and will look to continue their winning ways Monday as they take on BMCC in the conference tournament at Queensborough College, Monday at 4 PM.
