KCC Splits Double Duel VS Region Foes Rockland and Westchester

10/17/2015 4:18:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 In the first match of the double dual, KCC dominated Rockland in 3 sets.  The first and third sets were easy 25-14, and 25-13 wins against the Hawks.

The second set, however, was heavily contested by the Hawks and was a memorable game because of the intensity and great plays on both sides.  Late in the game with the Wave trailing 22-21, Freshmen Veronica Washington rose to the occasion at the net, tying the game with a ferocious block of a hard struck Rockland kill attempt that would fall to the floor with no chance of return.  With the score tied at 22 all and Pamela Martinez serving, the Rockland return was hit clearly out on the sideline, but the vision of side judge Juan Tapia, was blocked and he could not make the call.  With neither official seeing the ball go out, a re-play of the point was decided. The Wave went on to win the next 2 points which would have been the game winning points, but instead the score was 24-22 in favor of the Wave.  Rockland won the following 2 points forcing an extension of the match.  The Wave were able to fight back and scrap out a hard fought win, 28-26.

In the third set, the Wave jumped out to a 9-3 lead when Rockland started to climb back in the match.  The turning point came at a point when the Wave lead was cut to 4, at 15-11.  An errant hit by the Wave was heading out of bounds.  A nearby Rockland player turned her head to watch the ball sail out of bounds, but instead it struck her softly in the head, and the point went to Kingsborough.  The home team held serve, and rode the momentum of that play like a wave all the way to a 22-11 lead before they would give up a point.  The stretch was fueled by solid serves from sophomore Stephanie Hahn,  including 3 serves that would not be returned by the Hawks.  Also coming up big during that stretch was fellow sophomore Pik Ka Tang who came up with back to back blocks that were sent directly to the floor leaving Rockland no chance to even attempt a dig, raising the score to 18-11.  The wave finished strong defeating the Hawks of Rockland CC 25-13 in the third set.

The following matchup would pit KCC against regional rival, the Vikings of Westchester CC that at the time of the match trailed KCC in the standings by only 2 games.  Both teams were well aware entering the match that this would likely decide regional status with big playoff implications.

KCC won the first set 25-17 and was in a the midst of a heated second set down 23-24 when sophomore Pamela Martinez dove for a ball, sacrificing herself for the team as she had done time and again throughout the season.  Unfortunately, the sophomore standout player hit the back of her head on the playing surface, and had to be escorted to the hospital for evaluation.  The second set came to a conclusion after a lengthy delay going to Westchester, 23-25.  The Wave proved to be a tough competitor without one of their key players, dropping another highly contested set 22-25.  The 4th set would be another action packed set.  The Wave jumped out to an early lead but Westchester tied it up at 10, and took the lead 12-15.  After winning a point, and trailing by 2, KCC won the serve, and won 4 straight points to take the lead 17-15.  Later in the match, tied at 21, a Pik Ka Tang kill, and a Westchester CC error on a tough serve by Debora Santoso put the wave up for good, winning the crucial 4th set 25-23.  The 5th set went to WCC 10-15, giving them the match.  "Losing one of your go-to players mid-match and seeing her taken away by medical personnel did not unnerve this team.  It would have been easy for the players to lose focus as they were likely worried about their team mate. But they held it together and fought hard… another example of the resiliency of this team," said Assistant AD Keith Heron.

The next match for the women's volleyball team is a big one.  Tuesday, 10/20 at CUNY top-seeded rival Queensborough at 6pm.
