Hall of Fame
Cathy Dachtera first entered Kingsborough in 1968, as a student of our college. After being a member of KCC’s first graduating class in 1970, Cathy was immediately hired as the assistant to the athletic equipment manager. As it turned out, Cathy wound up retiring from the place where it all started, after a highly successful 40+ year career with KCC. Cathy spent her entire professional career working for KCC Athletics filling the positions of equipment manager, assistant athletic director and director of the sports complex.
Cathy was the backbone of the department and did a lot of the business related tasks like ordering uniforms, scheduling busses etc. More important than specific job tasks, Cathy also took on the unofficial role of being a friend to all. She was always there with a listening ear and helped guide many of her colleagues and student-athletes through tough academic and personal situations. Cathy’s hard work, though often behind the scenes, would not go unnoticed. In 2010, Cathy was honored with the prestigious “Professional of the Year Award,” as recognized by the New York Metropolitan Recreation and Parks Society. Outside of the office, Cathy also helped to expand recreational and sport classes offered to students with disabilities and the older population by instituting aqua exercise classes at KCC. Cathy’s fondest memories of her time at KCC were related to the annual athletic awards banquets. Cathy felt so proud to see all of the coaches’ and student-athletes’ accomplishments each year, and she continues to be a supporter of KCC athletics as a life-long fan! One of Cathy’s claims to fame is that she is the first female athletics equipment manager in the nation!
We thank Cathy for her years of service to KCC athletics, commend her on all her behind the scenes efforts, and applaud her on taking the time to be a friend to everyone no matter how busy she might have been. It is our honor to induct Cathy Dachtera into the KCC Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of its inaugural class.
