Sherry Harris served KCC Athletics as the head women’s tennis coach and women’s athletic director. In fact, she was the first women’s athletic director at KCC! When Sherry began working at KCC, there were no intercollegiate athletic competitions for women on the junior college level. When Sherry reflects on her career, she is most proud of the role she played in helping to establish NYC and NYS intercollegiate athletics for women. During that time, Sherry collaborated with women from Queensborough CC, Bronx CC, SICC, and NYC Tech to produce New York City’s first Junior College Athletic Association for women. After the competitions between junior college women of the city got underway, the association expanded to include junior colleges from Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland and Orange counties. This new association eventually became a branch of the AIAW (association of intercollegiate athletics for women). In the end, a decision was made to join the NJCAA once they recognized women’s athletics. It’s amazing how much a small group consisting of five women working in New York City College athletics were able to get done.
We thank Sherry for her years of service to KCC athletics, commend her on efforts in helping to empower the young women of Kingsborough Athletics, New York City and New York State, and applaud her on getting women’s sports to be recognized by the NJCAA. It is our honor to induct Sherry Harris into the KCC Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of its inaugural class.
