Dr. Samuel “Sam” Scherek has been a long time part of KCC athletics serving in many ways. Dr. Scherek has been our head men’s soccer coach and still currently holds the title of assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach.  However, Sam was able to effect the most change on KCC Athletics during his long-time tenure as the chairperson of the HPE department.  Dr. Scherek’s philosophy was that strong leadership would yield results and growth.  It was with that philosophy that Sam worked to improve KCC Athletics.  Sam had three major objectives to move the program forward.  First, Sam set out to hire staff that would help lead KCC Athletics in a positive direction.  Sam placed special emphasis on hiring knowledgeable and innovative athletic directors who were able to bring new and exciting ideas to expand upon the programs offered by KCC Athletics.  Secondly, in order to recruit talented coaches, Sam restructured KCC Athletics coaching salaries to match the salary of their PSAL counterparts.  With innovative administrators in place and restructured coaching salaries, Sam’s next move would be to hire coaches who were able to teach the specific fundamental skills required to excel in their particular sport.  With skilled coaches, the young student-athletes were trained to play to the best of their potential under Sam’s leadership.  On the front lines, Dr. Scherek was part of two NJCAA Division III national championships; one for women’s tennis and the other for men’s tennis.

We thank Sam for his years of service to KCC athletics, commend him on his efforts to take to move the department in a positive direction through strong leadership and congratulate him on his two tennis national championships.  It is our honor to induct Dr. Samuel Scherek into the KCC Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of its inaugural class.
